About Area - Mitte

The district of Mitte is literally in the middle and thus in the heart of Berlin. The Brandenburg Gate, the television tower and the Alexanderplatz have become symbols of Berlin around the world. They are all located in the district of Mitte, as are many of the other numerous sights of Berlin.

But Mitte is not only interesting for tourists. Many of the city’s exciting startups, and the Berlin art and culture scene, also choose Mitte as their home base. This of course attracts many expats from all over the world who preferably search for long term apartment rentals in this area of Berlin. Here, around Alexanderplatz and Hackesche Höfe, the new, modern and urban Berlin has developed.

Countless art galleries, trendy boutiques and the best restaurants of the city are located between Hackesche Höfe and Rosenthaler Platz. Many Berlin visitors choose this area as their starting point to explore the city. A large availability of furnished apartments for rent are found in this Berlin neighborhood, which invite you to enjoy a longer stay in Berlin. With only a weekend visit, it would be impossible to see everything the district of Mitte has to offer, yet alone the whole city!

The heart of the Berlin museum landscape is undoubtedly the Museumsinsel, located between the Spree and the Kupfergraben. There are numerous theater stages, such as the Berliner Ensemble, the Friedrichstadtpalast and the Deutsches Theater. Close by are other impressive historical buildings such as the German Dom or the Gendarmenmarkt with the French and the German Church, and the Schauspielhaus. With the old city palace being reconstructed at its old location, Mitte will gain yet another tourist highlight.

Like the entire city, Mitte has more than just one side to it. The magnificent historic buildings blend with the symbols of the former GDR around Alexanderplatz. Here, the socialist prefabricated buildings characterize the cityscape, while the television tower stands for the former division and competition between East and West Berlin.

From Alexanderplatz, which is the center of the east part of the city, the magnificent avenue Unter den Linden leads to the Brandenburg Gate. This landmark of German unity is located right next to the seat of the German Federal Government in the Reichstag and is the gateway to the large Tiergarten with the Siegessäule.

The change that has shaped Berlin since the Berlin wall came down is most visible directly above and below the Tiergarten. In the north, a new traffic intersection developed with the Berlin main train station. South of the Tiergarten, around the Potsdamer Platz and the Sony Center, a new, highly modern city quarter and the political and economic center of the city has developed.

This used to be a no mans land. Today, many modern apartments are for rent in this trendy Berlin neighborhood. The New National Gallery, the Philharmonic or the picture gallery are impressive architectural buildings in this area and always worth a visit.
