About Area - Prenzlauer Berg

Berlin Prenzlauer Berg – White Apartments – English

Prenzlauer Berg, with its magnificent, newly renovated old buildings, belongs to one of the most popular and therefore most expensive residential areas of Berlin. Young parents share the beautiful cobblestone streets with German celebrities and tourists from all over the world. If you live in “Prenzlberg”, as Berliners often lovingly call this area, you can stroll through the many small shops and designer studios or meet in one of the countless hip cafes.

It was in Prenzlauer Berg where the Berlin wall started to fall and shortly after the reunification of East and West Germany it became the center of the alternative student scene. At that time, it was where you could find the cheapest apartments for rent in all of Berlin. Many of the run down houses were occupied and Prenzlauer Berg was known as the playground for punks and the literary and artistic bohemians. Times have changed, but you can still feel the alternative scene every Sunday at the lively and now world-famous Mauerpark flea market. Throughout the year the Mauerpark is a favorite meeting place for musicians, artists and hipsters from all over the world.

Not far away from the Mauerpark, the Berlin Wall Memorial commemorates the division of Berlin and tells impressive stories of successful or failed attempts to escape from the former East to the West. Here you can also learn more about the important role the Prenzlauer Berg played in the German reunification. The core of the political opposition of the GDR was not far from where the frequently visited Berlin Wall Museum stands today.

If you prefer it quieter or want to stay long term in Berlin, try to find an apartment, or better, a furnished apartment for rent away from the tourist attractions. Around the Kollwitzplatz or the water tower you can enjoy the genuine Prenzlauer Berg Lifestyle. Many young families live here, and even those who stay in Berlin only for a short while will immediately feel welcome and at home. The area is considered one of the most child-friendly and family-friendly areas in the city. The playground at the Helmholtz Platz is also a popular meeting point for stylish young Prenzlauer Berg moms and their offspring.

Not only for the little ones, but also for all the big Berlin residents and visitors there are plenty of “playgrounds” in Prenzlauer Berg! On Kastanienallee you can find many cute shops, stylish cafes, fantastic restaurants and cool bars as well as the independent cinema Lichtblick and the Dock11 theater. The street is often jokingly referred to as “Casting Allee”. Nowhere else in Berlin can you see more beautiful people walking the streets than here! Another cultural center in Prenzlauer Berg is the Kulturbrauerei. In the building complex of the former Schultheiss brewery, close to the subway station Eberswalder Str., you can find a big cinema for alternative films, a jazz bar, many restaurants, theaters and several clubs and concert halls.
